Understanding Vulnerable Damage
What is Vulnerable?
Vulnerable is a debuff state that can be applied to enemies through specific skills, aspects, and class mechanics. When an enemy is vulnerable, they take increased damage from all sources. This is tracked as Damage Bucket 3, which means it multiplies separately from your other damage bonuses.
Vulnerable Multiplier = 1 + (Uptime % × Vulnerable Damage %)
Why Vulnerable is So Powerful
Because vulnerable damage exists in its own bucket (Bucket 3), it multiplies with all your other damage sources. This makes it one of the most efficient stats to invest in for raw DPS increases.
50% uptime, 40% damage
Multiplier: 1.20x (20% increase)
90% uptime, 80% damage
Multiplier: 1.72x (72% increase)
How to Apply Vulnerable
- • Enhanced Challenging Shout makes enemies vulnerable
- • Aspect of the Expectant extends vulnerable duration
- • Exposing aspect applies vulnerable on basic skill hits
- • Frost Nova baseline makes frozen enemies vulnerable
- • Avalanche aspect applies vulnerable with each cast
- • Glass Cannon passive helps with vulnerable damage scaling
- • Puncture skill baseline applies vulnerable
- • Exploit passive gives bonus damage to vulnerable enemies
- • Many rogue aspects synergize with vulnerable mechanics
- • Decrepify curse applies vulnerable to cursed enemies
- • Splintering aspect spreads vulnerable through bone skills
- • Corpse Tendrils can set up vulnerable opportunities
- • Debilitating Roar makes nearby enemies vulnerable
- • Earthen Might passive helps maintain vulnerable uptime
- • Shockwave aspect applies vulnerable in an area
Optimization Priorities
- 1. Maximize Uptime First
Get vulnerable uptime as close to 100% as possible through skills and aspects. This is more important than stacking vulnerable damage.
- 2. Stack Vulnerable Damage on Gear
Prioritize vulnerable damage on rings, amulet, and gloves. This stat can roll up to 20-25% per item.
- 3. Invest Paragon Points Wisely
Rare nodes and glyphs that provide vulnerable damage are extremely valuable. Path to these early in your paragon progression.
- 4. Balance With Other Buckets
While vulnerable is powerful, remember it's just one bucket. You still need crit, additive damage, and multiplicative bonuses for maximum DPS.
- 5. Test Your Uptime in Combat
Practice your rotation to ensure you're actually maintaining the vulnerable uptime your build should provide. Theoretical uptime differs from practical uptime.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Having 100% vulnerable damage means nothing if enemies are only vulnerable 30% of the time.
Vulnerable is powerful, but you need balanced investment across all five buckets for optimal DPS.
Many bosses have phases where they're immune or untargetable, reducing your actual vulnerable uptime.
Calculator numbers are theoretical. Always validate your build's performance in Nightmare Dungeons or The Pit.
